The Arizona Cardinals hosted the New Orleans Saints Saturday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale in Week 1 of the NFL preseason. Look back at our updates from the game.
Rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler led the Saints on a successful two-minute drill to beat the Arizona Cardinals 16-14 on Saturday in Glendale.
Arizona took a 14-13 lead with 1:55 to play.
Rattler, a Phoenix native, then led the Saints on a 56-yard drive that finished with a 37-yard field goal from Charlie Smyth.
In the battle to be the Cardinals' backup QB, Clayton Tune appeared to have the edge. He played the second half and went 15-for-23 for 163 yards and a touchdown. Desmond Ridder played the first half and was 4-for-9 for 43 yards.
Rattler, the third Saints' QB to enter the game, played against the Cardinals' third-team defense. He was 9-for-17 for 70 yards. He is competing with Jake Haener (9-for-13, 107 yards) for the role of backing up Derek Carr (2-for-6, 12 yards).
Michael Carter led the Cardinals in rushing with 41 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. Dan Chisena was the leading receiver for Arizona with five catches for 63 yards.
The Cardinals were penalized seven times for 84 yards.
Cardinals grab late lead against Saints
Clayton Tune's 8-yard touchdown pass to Tony Jones Jr. was upheld under review and the Cardinals took a 14-13 lead over the Saints with 1:55 to play.
Tune entered in the second half and was a respectable 15-for-23 for 163 yards and a touchdown. He was sacked twice.
The touchdown was the third catch of the day for Jones Jr, who totaled 24 yards receiving and added another 11 on five carries.

Saints lead Cardinals after 3 quarters
The Arizona Cardinals face a third-and-15 to start the third quarter after quarterback Clayton Tune was sacked for an 8-yard loss as the second quarter closed.
Tune has been sacked twice for a total of 17 yards. He is 5-for-6 passing for 67 yards.
Arizona has thrown the ball just 15 times. Desmond Ridder, who played the first half, finished 4-for-9 for 43 yards. The two are competing to backup starter Kyler Murray.
Murray is not expected to appear in any of the team's three preseason games.

Spencer Rattler in at QB for Saints
Spencer Rattler, a native of Phoenix, entered at quarterback on the Saints' first offensive series of the second half.
Rattler led the Saints to a touchdown — capping it with a 4-yard run that was initially ruled short, but changed to a touchdown after a challenge and review.
Rattler was 1-for-1 for 15 yards on the drive.
His next series wasn't as successful as he went 1-for-3 for 6 yards.
Rattler was a fifth-round pick by the Saints in 2024. He attended Oklahoma (2019-2021) and South Carolina (2022-23) after starring at Pinnacle High School. Rattler was features on the Netflix sports documentary QB1:Beyond the Lights.

Clayton Tune in at QB for Cardinals
Michael Carter scored the first touchdown for the Cardinals this season in a preseason game against the Saints.
Carter carried the ball 11 yards for the score. Matt Prater's point after made it 7-6 Cardinals.
Clayton Tune replaced Desmond Ridder at quarterback at the start of the half.
Tune was 4-for-5 with 54 yards in his lone series. Ridder was 4-for-9 for 43 yards in the entire first half.
Carter now has six carries for 32 yards.
Saints lead Cardinals at half
A low-thrown ball by Desmond Ridder on fourth-and-2 fell incomplete and allowed the Saints to carry a lead into the second half.
Ridder, who quarterbacked the Cardinals throughout the first half, is 4-for-9 for 43 yards. He was sacked once and has five carries for 39 yards.
The incompletion to Andy Baccellia ended a 10-play possession that covered 57 yards. The Cardinals turned the ball over on downs with 29 seconds left in the half.
In those 29 seconds, the Saints covered 73 yards — mostly on a 58-yard pass to A.T. Perry — and kicked a field goal to double their lead.
Jake Haener entered at quarterback for the Saints after the first two offensive series. He is 9-for-13 for 107 yards.

Saints break through Cardinals' defense
Blake Grupe's 26-yard field goal is the difference between the Cardinals and Saints.
The kick came at the end of a 10-play, 40-yard drive by New Orleans. The bulk of the yards came on a pair of completions to A.T. Perry.

Cardinals, Saints offenses quiet in first quarter
In the first preseason game for both teams, the Cardinals and Saints combined for just 71 yards of total offense.
The Saints held the edge 44 to 27 in yardage, but the game remained scoreless.
As anticipated, Cardinals QB Kyler Murray has not played in the game. In his stead, Desmond Ridder is 1-for-2 for 3 yards. He's been sacked once and carried the ball once for 5 yards.
Trey Benson has been the primary running back for the Cardinals. He has 16 yards on four carries.

Saints QB Derek Carr out after two series
New Orleans Saints starting quarterback Derek Carr played two series before giving way to Jake Haener.
Carr was 2-for-6 for 12 yards.
Haener is a second-year pro who was drafted by the Saints in the fourth round in 2023. He played at Washington (2017-18) and Fresno State (2019-2022) before being selected.
Cardinals defense solid in first series of preseason action
Saints QB Derek Carr was 1-for-4 with his only completion going for 10 yards against the Cardinals.
The Cardinals defense had a near-interception on a batted ball at the line. Carr threw one pass away, but the Cardinals defended well and forced the other incompletions.
In the first live showing of the Cardinals' new kickoff team, Matt Prater's 67-yard kick was returned out of the end zone for 29 yards.
Arizona's offense didn't even look that sharp in its debut. Desmond Ridder was sacked for a 6-yard loss and the Cardinals went three-and-out.
Kyler Murray participates in pre-game warmup
Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon said earlier this week that quarterback Kyler Murray won't play in any of the team's three preseason games.
But that hasn't kept QB1 off the field. Murray took the field for warmups on Saturday and went through several passing drills before giving way to Clayton Tune and Desmond Ridder, who are battling for the No. 2 spot.
Murray was also at the center of the huddle before the team left the field following warmups.
