Result — Austria 1-2 Turkey
Defender Merih Demiral scored an unlikely double as Turkey beat Austria 2-1 in a game of the tournament contender.
Austria were stunned when Demiral scored the quickest knockout-stage goal in European Championship history after 57 seconds. The Al-Ahli centre-back doubled Turkey’s lead just before the hour mark.
Austria poured forward late on and pulled one back when substitute Michael Gregoritsch turned the ball home at the far post. They then came close to leveling in the final seconds, only for goalkeeper Mert Gunok to keep out Christoph Baumgartner’s point-blank header.
Turkey now face the Netherlands for a place in the Euro 2024 semi-finals — the side Austria memorably beat 3-2 in the group stage of the tournament.
The Briefing: Missiles fall, records tumble and the save of the tournament?
Getty Images
This always promised to be one of the more frenetic nights at Euro 2024 — and Austria vs Turkey did not disappoint.
A dramatic start saw Turkey take the lead inside a minute. Relentless attacking. A miraculous late save. A feisty atmosphere, occasionally bubbling over into something more sinister.
It all made for a compelling last-16 match and ultimately, Turkey did enough to secure a quarter-final against the Netherlands in Berlin on Saturday.
Our experts Tim Spiers, Mark Carey and Tom Burrows debate the big talking points.

Rangnick can’t believe it’s over for Austria
Getty Images
And just like that, Austria’s hopes for a special tournament come to an end. Even their head coach Ralf Rangnick couldn’t believe it. Here he is, speaking to UEFA:
💬 “We didn’t have the necessary luck and I believe if the game had gone to extra time, we would have won. We had time to score an equaliser, but it’s difficult when they have Gordon Banks in goal!”
“We didn’t make enough of our own chances and we didn’t defend their set-pieces well enough.
“The four games we played were very entertaining, including today. Not everything went very accurately, but they were four very entertaining and intense games. Now we need to take this with us into the Nations League and then into World Cup qualifying.
“I cannot believe we are going home today, we thought we were going to continue our journey.”
The quarter-final line-up is complete
The Athletic
We now know our last eight at Euro 2024. Here is how it looks:
- Spain vs Germany: Friday, 5pm BST (Stuttgart)
- Portugal vs France: Friday, 8pm BST (Hamburg)
- England vs Switzerland: Saturday, 5pm BST (Dusseldorf)
- Netherlands vs Turkey: Saturday, 8pm BST (Berlin)
The kids are clearly alright

He is young, Arda Guler. But he is still not the youngest to provide an assist at a European Championship knockout stage (since 1980):
- 1: Lamine YAMAL (16 years 353 days)
- 2: Arda GÜLER (19 years 128 days)
- 3: Cristiano RONALDO (19 years 146 days)
I think we could be waiting a very long time to see Yamal’s record beaten…
Guler now in special company
Getty Images
Someone else who had a memorable night was Turkey and Real Madrid forward, Arda Guler.
Tonight he became the third teenager to both score and assist at the same European Championship.
The previous two? Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, who both did it at Euro 2004.
Not bad company there, Arda.
Demiral’s rare sugar

What a night for Turkey centre-back, Merih Demiral.
His brace tonight makes him the first defender to score twice in a knockout stage game at a major tournament — that’s World Cup and European Championship — since...
France’s Lilian Thuram did so against Croatia in the 1998 World Cup semi-finals.

A good day for Netherlands
Getty Images
Ronald Koeman’s team produced their first genuinely impressive performance of Euro 2024 earlier in the day when they beat Romania 3-0.
Having finished third in a group Austria topped and lost 3-2 to Rangnick’s team in the process, Netherlands must be licking their lips at the prospect of taking on Turkey for a place in the semi-final; an eminently winnable game if they play as they did this afternoon.
They will certainly feel this is preferable to a rematch with the Austrians and this all seemed unthinkable just a few days ago, yet luck now seems to be on the side of the Dutch.
Sabitzer struck by object thrown from stands
Getty Images
UK broadcaster ITV has shown footage of the incident late in the game where Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marcel Sabitzer went down holding his head after appearing to be struck by something thrown from the stands.
The cameras clearly pick up a copper-coloured sphere that flies into the side of his head. It looks like a coin of course, but it is also difficult to be sure from those pictures alone.
Fortunately, Sabitzer was fine to continue. But I’m sure we will hear more about the incident over the coming day or two.
Full-time stats zone
Now then, these full-time numbers are MUCH more fun and representative of those 90 minutes. Although also quite painful if you’re Austrian. Here they are…
FT: Austria 1-2 Turkey
- Possession: 60% — 40%
- Shots: 21 — 6
- On target: 5 — 3
- XG: 2.74 — 1.06
- Big chances: 5 — 2
- Blocked shots: 7 — 1
- Duels won: 44 — 57
- Dispossessed: 11 — 6
So many chances, but Turkey had a big say in why Austria couldn’t find a way to make more from them. And with that, maybe this time Turkey are dark horses — on one of the few occasions no one was willing to label them such before the tournament.
Guler will get another one
Getty Images
We gave Arda Guler the big treatment ahead of today’s game. Well, now he’ll get to show what he has got against the Netherlands in a European Championship quarter-final.
What a talent, and what an impact he is making at this tournament.
Who wouldn’t want to see more of that?
Rangnick flatters to deceive
Getty Images
At times Ralf Rangnick feels like that unlistenable band all the great bands cite as a major influence. He has undoubtedly had a major effect on a number of managerial greats but his own record leaves a little to be desired.
At this tournament the German seemed to be answering his critics after topping a difficult group but they were fully expected to dispose of Turkey with ease, a side they smashed 6-1 in a friendly as recently as March.
Instead, Turkey stunned the Austrians and will take on The Netherlands this weekend for a place in the semi-finals of a major tournament.

A Turkish masterpiece

I believe the term is:
Hang it in the Louvre.
What a night for Demiral
Getty Images
The erstwhile Juventus centre back is plying his trade in the Saudi Pro League at the age of 26. His Euro 2020 got off to the worst possible start when he scored the first goal of the tournament but at the wrong end, an own goal that was just the start of a 3-0 defeat to eventual winners Italy. He more than made up for that tonight, becoming the first player in history to score a brace for Turkey in a Euros knockout game.
Occasionally football provides the perfect redemption arc and he will never have to buy a drink in Ankara again.
A missed opportunity of sorts for Austria
Getty Images
As for Austria, you feel like that erratic first half cost them dearly.
They looked much more constructive and threatening once Gregoritsch came on at half-time, which makes you feel he may have suited starting.
A missed opportunity then? Maybe.
But also, maybe it was previously at Euro 2024 where Austria really over-performed and this was par.
Quite the ending to quite the night
Getty Images
What an ending. What a remarkable final save from Gunok to deny what looked destined to be a stunning equaliser for Austria.
Turkey have been so good tonight, in so many different ways.
And they have done it. For the first time in 16 years, they will play in the quarter-finals of a major tournament.
It will be the Netherlands in Berlin on Saturday.
But before that, Turkey parties!
