Did you know that concrete production worldwide amounts to about 30 billion tons a year? A study conducted by Assistant Professor Reza Moini at Princeton University found a stronger alternative to concrete modeled after the biological composition of oyster and abalone shells. These shells consist of a material called nacre (also known as “mother of pearl”) that contains strong, microscopic hexagonal tablets glued together by a soft biopolymer. This complex organic structure is 17 times more crack-resistant than concrete. The hexagonal shape contributes to the strength, while the biopolymer acts as crack-resistant, flexible glue. This balance of hard and soft materials allows for a durable structure. The discovery of a stronger alternative to concrete affirms we should be exploring other bio-inspired models. By observing how objects in nature are formed, we can create stronger solutions and structures. What are other structures in nature could we use as inspiration for modern building materials? For an area as urban as Kent, Washington, it is unique for a single project to reduce flood risk, promote fish habitat growth, and provide an open space for recreation and community. The Lower Russell Levee Setback project is one of the largest, multi-benefit flood control and ecosystem restoration projects in King County. Levee improvements near Van Doren's Landing Park reduce flood risks to residential and commercial development, while also improving riparian and aquatic habitat along the Green River for fish and wildlife. Park-goers can also enjoy new amenities, including picnic shelters and play structures. Anchor QEA provided construction management services and lead a multi-disciplinary team to oversee the contractor’s work for quality, cost, schedule, and scope compliance. The team also performed cultural resources monitoring, surveying, water quality monitoring, and material testing. The project’s success was contingent upon the collaboration of King County’s Water and Land Resources Division, King County Flood Control District, the City of Kent, and the Tribes, among other teaming partners.#Resiliency #Remediation #Revitailization #Restoration #AnchorQEA #LowerRussellLevvee https://hubs.la/Q02J4gv_0

What effect can one levee system have on its environment? Before construction, neighborhoods near Jan Road faced periodic flooding—notably in February 2020 and January 2009—due to overflowing water from Taylor Creek. This resulted in hazardous conditions and property damage. Nearby trails on the Cedar River also experienced erosion due to the original levee’s proximity. Situated along the bank of the Cedar River in Washington, the new setback levee and associated floodplain improvements are designed to mitigate flood and erosion risks to residents, property, and local infrastructure. The project included a floodplain side channel, engineered log jams, and buried revetments—features that improve natural riverine and riparian processes, functions, and habitats. As a part of successful implementation of the project, Anchor QEA’s construction management services entailed comprehensive design reviews, value engineering strategies, and project management to oversee the contractor’s work and team with King County for cost, schedule, and quality coordination. The levee and river restoration features support a healthier salmon population and provide a safer environment for the community of King County. Soybeans, Fish Food, and Sustainability. The production of soy-related food products (milk and meat alternatives) creates tons of wastewater per year. Yet, this wastewater contains single-celled bacteria that can convert nutrients into a high amount of protein-rich food. A recent study has been conducted on a group of farmed juvenile Asian sea bass to test the efficiency of this food alternative. How does this bacterium = food? These two protein-accumulating microbes, Acid Propionibacterium and Propioniciclav, were incubated in bioreactors for several days, then harvested and dried into fish food. The sea bass were then tested in two groups: one was fed with the usual feed mixture and the new feed, whereas the other was fed only the new food. The results concluded that the fish were still able to receive the necessary nutrients and grow to a healthy weight. What does this mean for sustainable farming? For one, the search for more sustainable alternatives can lead you to surprising places and solutions. But more importantly, the implications of recycled fish food can take us one step closer to a circular bioeconomy where our waste can serve a different purpose. What other aspects of recycling should we be looking at when it comes to construction and engineering?Read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/ezCWZFSNAccess the research here: https://lnkd.in/eze_D4f4#sustainabilitynews #fishfoodforthought

The Meadowdale Beach Park and Estuary Restoration was selected as the Pacific Northwest Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Infrastructure Project of the Year! This award recognizes professionalism, innovation, and excellence in the management of construction process. The Meadowdale Beach Park and Estuary Restoration project is significant for its role in salmon recovery. By enlarging a stream crossing under railroad tracks along the shoreline, this park lawn area was converted into a high functioning estuary to benefit salmon habitat. The construction was also important in maintaining the Puget Sound shoreline and making improvements to the park, including adding picnic bench viewpoints of the estuary, beach, and Lund’s Gulch Creek.Congratulations to for leading this project, our AnchorQEA team, Hanson Professional Services Inc., , and Strider Construction Company. Working together is a great opportunity to collaborate on innovative improvements to wildlife preservation and the shared spaces we all love to enjoy. #congratulations #restoration #remediation #revitalization #resiliency #AnchorQEA
